The first half of 2026 has brought an unprecedented wave of momentum to the US energy storage market. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are stepping into the spotlight—driven by record-breaking grid capacity targets, the explosive expansion of AI data centers, and a new wave of regulatory reforms and project tenders.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), developers are planning to add 86 GW of new utility-scale electric generating capacity in 2026—the largest single-year addition on record. Of this, battery storage accounts for 28%, or 24.3 GW, more than double the growth rate seen in recent years.
Three states dominate the storage pipeline: Texas leads with 53% (12.9 GW), followed by California at 14% (3.4 GW) and Arizona at 13% (3.2 GW).Major BESS projects scheduled for completion in 2026 include:
Lunis Creek BESS (Texas): 621 MW
Clear Fork Creek Solar & BESS (Texas): 600 MW
Bellefield 2 Solar & Energy Storage Farm (California): 500 MW
Tehuacana Creek 1 BESS (Texas): 418 MW
Notably, newly announced BESS projects now increasingly incorporate advanced power conversion systems with higher efficiency and faster response times—exactly the features that differentiate premium charging module suppliers. Maxwell 120kW power modules MXR1000120B-DC can achieve efficiency of over 98.5%.
AI Data Center + BESS: A New Business Model Taking Shape
AI data center expansion is not only driving electricity demand but also reshaping how storage systems are procured. These models directly influence charging module requirements—larger storage capacities, longer-duration operation, and bidirectional power flow capabilities are becoming standard.
