Portugal Launches Energy Storage Strategy, Targeting 6.9 GW by 2030

    Portugal’s National Energy Storage Strategy

    Portugal has launched a public consultation on its National Energy Storage Strategy (Estratégia Nacional de Armazenamento de Energia, also called ENAE), marking another important step toward expanding energy storage and supporting the country’s transition to a more renewable-based power system. The consultation will remain open until September 16, 2026.

     

    Under the proposed strategy, Portugal aims to reach 6.9 GW of installed energy storage capacity by 2030, increasing to 9.76 GW by 2040. The plan covers a wide range of technologies, including pumped-hydro storage, batteries and other large-scale energy storage solutions.

     

    Energy Storage to Support Higher Renewable Integration

    According to the technical studies behind the strategy, energy storage will play an increasingly important role in integrating renewable energy into Portugal’s electricity system. The country is targeting 82%–85% renewable integration in electricity generation by 2030, with renewable penetration expected to continue increasing toward 89%–91.4% by 2040.

     

    Energy storage can help address the challenges created by the growing share of solar and wind power. In particular, storage can improve the economic value of solar generation by shifting electricity to higher-value periods and reducing losses during periods of high renewable production.

     

    New Market Opportunities for Energy Storage

    A key part of Portugal’s strategy is to create better economic conditions for energy storage projects. The government is considering a value-stacking approach, allowing storage systems to generate revenue from electricity markets, system services and future capacity mechanisms.

     

     

    Innovation Across Battery and Long-Duration Storage Technologies

    The ENAE also places a strong emphasis on technological innovation. Portugal plans to support research into sodium-ion batteries, flow batteries, long-duration energy storage, battery recycling and digitalization.

     

     

    Growing Demand for Power Conversion Technology

    The planned expansion of energy storage in Portugal could create new opportunities across the entire energy storage value chain. As more battery storage systems, EV charging infrastructure, renewable energy projects and hydrogen applications are deployed, high-efficiency and flexible power conversion systems will become increasingly important.

     

    Power conversion modules are a key component in these applications. AC-DC modules can connect AC grid to the energy storage systems, while DC-DC modules provide efficient voltage conversion and power management on the DC side. Bidirectional DC-DC modules can enable flexible two-way energy flow, making them particularly suitable for battery energy storage, V2X and other applications requiring both charging and discharging.

     

    Our AC-DC, DC-DC and bidirectional DC-DC power modules are designed to support a wide range of applications, including BESS, EV charging, V2G and hydrogen production. As the European energy system moves toward higher renewable penetration and greater flexibility, efficient power conversion technology will play an increasingly important role in building the next generation of energy infrastructure.
